Mississauga has one of the highest levels of population diversity in Canada, which makes our city a very unique and interesting place to live. However, it also means that many children face barriers (language fluency, learning abilities and others) to learning every day.
We can’t allow any child to fall behind, and the Peel Board must obtain increased support for ESL and Special Education from the Province. The government should explain why Mississauga and Peel school boards are the sixth most underfunded (on a per/student basis) compared to the rest of Ontario.
Another way to prevent students from falling behind is to engage in poverty-reduction strategies, which improve literacy scores and high school graduation rates. The idea for a Student Apprenticeship programme is worth consideration.
Children who are hungry or lack proper clothing cannot learn easily. We should try our best to ensure that every child has an equal chance to succeed in life.
