In order to reduce operating expenditures in the future, the Peel Board should begin developing a “Green Roof” strategy as soon as possible. Grass-top roofing acts to cools classrooms in the summer and reduce heat-loss in the winter, and offers a cost-efficient, long-term way to manage growing energy bills.

Other conservation methods exist in many practical forms, such as:

• light-switch motion sensors;
• window replacements;
• LED bulb conversion; and
• educating children about the importance of reducing power demand.

We need to start this conversation sooner rather than later.
